The history of the Eifel is anything but short. Numerous peoples and cultures have made their impact on the region during the millennia. Castles, forts, churches and abbeys remind us of powerful relations from the past.
Scenic villages and small towns with their half-timbered houses are sure to enchant its visitors. The Eifel occupies the eastern section of the Eifel-Ardennen mountain range. Its highest point is the Hohe Act at an elevation of 747 meters. To the south it borders the Mosel, to the east the river Rhine. The largest part of the Eifel lies in western Germany, a small part in Belgium. The German part is located in Nordrhein-Westfalen and Rheinland-Pfalz. The town of Schönecken has a public swimming pool and a large playground. 10 km away, in Prüm there is an indoor swimming center. There are many excursion destinations in the region: you can visit the Losheim Museum on the German-Belgian border, or towns like Prüm, Gerolstein or even Luxembourg. The Eifel Zoo in Lünebach is situated amidst beautiful surroundings. Among the large carnivores you'll find here like lions, tigers and bears, there are also tropical trees and plants.
Families with children can visit a true “bauernhof”-style farm. For hikers and bikers there is an extensive network of trails and roads running through the Vulkaneifel region, with routes of varying difficulty.
Some of these routes have been used for the Eifel Tour in Birresborn. In the Pelm region you can visit the Eagle and Wolf Park of Kasselburg, which contains numerous birds of prey. In the forests around Kasselburg live Europe's largest wolf pack. This is truly a great starting point for discovering the hidden treasures of this region.
